Drainage advice written for other places doesn’t fit the South Plains. The numbers that shape every recommendation we make come from the soil survey, the water board, and the rain gauge.
Here’s the mechanism: rain soaks into the topsoil, hits the caliche, and stops — it can’t percolate away. The plains are too flat to carry it off, and the land drains internally toward playa basins. The core idea
In most of the country, drainage can lean on the ground to absorb water and on gravity to move it. On the South Plains, both are off the table: caliche blocks water from soaking in, and the flat plains give it nowhere to run. That single fact reshapes everything we build. A drain here isn’t about helping water soak away — it’s about collecting the water and conveying it to a real outlet off your lot, whether that’s daylighting to a lower area, an approved discharge, or a sump pump on the flattest ground.
That’s also the number-one reason drains fail here. A French drain or dry well built to “soak away” into caliche just fills up and sits, and that’s the failed system we get called to replace. Get the diagnosis and the outlet right, and a Lubbock yard drains reliably. Get them wrong and you’ve buried money in the ground. The whole point of a free assessment is to read your specific lot — where the caliche is, where the water wants to go — and design around it.
You don’t need a lake in the yard to have a drainage problem worth fixing. The common early signs we’re called about: a yard or a corner that floods in every real storm and stands for days; water that sheets toward the house instead of away; a low spot that never quite dries; water pooling against the foundation; or new cracks and sticking doors that hint the soil around the slab is swinging wet-to-dry. Any one of these is reason enough for a free look, and catching it early usually makes the fix smaller.
None of this requires you to become a soil expert — it just requires the company you call to actually account for the caliche and the flat ground instead of running a generic playbook. That’s the difference between a drain that works the first time and the failed trench we’re so often called to replace. It’s also why we don’t sell soak-away pits and dry wells as a default here the way a company that works mostly in sandy soil might: on caliche, water handed to the ground is water that isn’t going anywhere, and we’d rather build you something that works than something that looks like a fix until the next storm.

You don’t need a sales pitch — you need someone to tell you what’s actually happening under your yard and what it honestly takes to fix it. So we come out, walk the property, shoot grades on ground too flat to eyeball, and figure out where the caliche is and where the water can go. Then we lay out the right-sized fix with a written scope before any work starts. Sometimes that’s a full French drain and sump; sometimes it’s leveling and a couple of catch basins for a fraction of the cost. We’d rather sell you the right amount of work than the most.

A lot of Lubbock drainage gets sold as a sideline — a bolt-on to an irrigation or landscaping job, using the same template that company runs in every city it serves. The trouble is that South Plains drainage isn’t generic. It’s a specific engineering problem set by caliche and flat, internally-drained ground, and the fixes that actually work here — positive outlets, sumps, grades built by the inch — aren’t the ones a one-size playbook reaches for. Common questions
Two things stack up here. First, most Lubbock yards sit over caliche — a cemented calcium-carbonate hardpan the Handbook of Texas describes as an impervious caprock, often only two to three feet down. Water can't soak through it, so it perches near the surface. Second, the Llano Estacado is famously flat, so there's little natural slope to carry water away. Add a hard burst of rain and the water has nowhere to go but your low spots. The fix is engineered drainage that moves water off the lot, because the ground won't do it on its own.
Caliche is a hard layer of calcium carbonate cemented into the subsoil — think of a natural concrete pan a foot or few beneath your grass. On the Southern High Plains it forms the caprock, and it's essentially impervious, so rainwater that soaks through the topsoil hits the caliche and stops. It matters because a normal 'dig a hole and let it soak away' approach fails here: a drain has to be designed to route water to a real outlet, not just into ground that won't take it.
Playas are the shallow, clay-lined depressions that dot the plains around Lubbock — the county was documented with hundreds of them. They're the low point of their little watershed, so runoff collects there and drains internally rather than flowing off to a river. If your lot sits in or near one of these micro-basins, water naturally migrates toward you and lingers. Knowing where your property sits relative to the local playa or low area is part of designing drainage that works.
